Landscape: The Physical Foundation

表里山河:文明的物理容器

(Between Mountains and Rivers: The Physical Container of Civilization)

The geography of Shanxi is often described by an ancient idiom: “表里山河” (Biǎo Lǐ Shān Hé), meaning “mountains on the outside, rivers on the inside.”

Bordered by the towering Taihang Mountains to the east and the roaring Yellow River to the west and south, this rugged, isolated terrain acted as a natural fortress. This unique geological isolation allowed ancient Chinese timber architecture, early Buddhist art, and regional folk cultures to survive the ravages of war and time far better than in the open plains.

“To understand the architecture and the soul of Shanxi, one must first measure its mountains and rivers.”

Here, we explore the monumental landscapes that shaped the destiny of the region.
